Christchurch Boys’ High School’s newest All Black Four years ago Anton Lienert-Brown was plying his trade for Christchurch Boys’ High School. On Saturday he became CBHS’s 46th All Black, and in his first touch against the Wallabies he flicked a netball-style pass to Israel Dagg for the All Black’s opening try. He had a top debut in the 29-9 win. •For the 10 things you need to know about Lienert-Brown turn to page 5 PHOTO: GETTY

Laptop boost for school after drop in funding „„ By Andrew King A SCHOOL struggling after a $40,000 funding cut has been buoyed by the donation of 28 laptops. Northcote School had the money slashed from its budget after a decile change at the start of the year. The school asked for help from the Rotary Club of Belfast and Kaiapoi because it needed more computers for students

but were stunned when 28 were donated. Deputy principal Perry Rapson said that meant a entire class could use computers at a time. Presently there were only five laptops for the senior class. “It is brilliant to have that kind of support from the community and it will make a huge difference to the pupils, he said. “With computer literacy being essential to the educational success of young people it is

Brian Gargiulo Councillor for Harewood Ward Your CDHB Board Member People are important

fantastic that they have brought these computers for us, Mr Rapson said. He said the school went from decile two to decile three at the start of the year, which means it received $40,000 less funding. Deciles are a measure of the socio-economic position of a school’s student community relative to other schools throughout the country. The Ministry of Education recalculates deciles for all schools

every five years following the census of population and dwellings. President of the Rotary Club of Belfast and Kaiapoi Graham Robertson said it was about giving pupils in their area the same opportunity as all others in the city. “Our club members believe all kids should have the same chance at higher education, irrespective of the suburb in which they live, he said.

BLINDS...Cleaned, Repaired & Restored...

“Due to the decile rating and on-going funding being based on the larger and more prosperous area, Northcote School misses out on the funding they need to give pupils the same educational tools that other schools in more affluent areas enjoy. As part of this project students from Canterbury University are willing to help with the computer training to provide support for students and teacher.

St Albans has most dogs By Fraser Walker-Pearce and Andrew King About a quarter of dogs in the city live in north-western suburbs, with St Albans leading the city with most registered dogs on 1452. Data released by the city council showed that St Albans and Belfast are among the top three for dog numbers alongside Spreydon. Belfast has 975 dogs, followed closely by Papanui with 946, Bishopdale with 853 and Redwood with 773. The total in the north-west is 7953. In the city as of August 16, there were 31,859 dogs, which includes all those registered in the city, as well as some that have been registered previously.

About 19 per cent live in southeastern households, 17 per cent in south-western suburbs, and the other 13 to 14 per cent live elsewhere around the city. The most popular breed in the city is the labrador, with 4686 registered this year, down from 4948 last year. The second most popular breed is staffordshire bull terrier, with 2660 calling Christchurch home. In Brief DETOURS The intersection of Westminister St, Roosevelt St and Courtenay St will be closed while an intersection upgrade is carried out. Instead use Cranford St, Innes Rd and Rutland St to detour around the work site. Aikmans Rd will be one-way eastbound for the next three weeks while wastewater repairs take place. For west-bound traffic on Aikmans Rd, the detour will be Akela St, Cox St, Sterling St and Office Rd. PEDESTRIAN ISLAND The Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee will decide on Thursday if it will install a pedestrian island on Main North Rd between Langdons and Harewood Rds. The island was requested by Age Concern to make it easier for people to cross the road to get to the centre. City council traffic engineering staff have recommended not to install it as the island would impact traffic flow. LITTER FINES Dropping rubbish will come with a bigger penalty from now on. The city council has set up a new range of fines for different amounts of rubbish. People caught dropping less than one-litre of rubbish, which includes cigarette buts and cans, could face a $100 fine. Litter of more than 120-litres and hazardous waste will face a higher fine of $400.

Veterinary practice

MY LOVELY LOLA I write about my patients monthly and now I find myself writing about my precious girl “LOLA”. My eldest son Connor left for the USA a few weeks ago to study and play tennis for UC Berkeley in San Francisco. Steve travelled with Connor to help him organize his first week at college and while he was away, our beautiful black lab presented one morning weak and wobbley in her hindlegs, unable to walk properly and support herself. She was acutely painful which was hard for me see and knuckling over on her paws. She was still ravenous though and was not incontinent. The day before she had gone running with Dylan and appeared normal. She has never obviously shown any sign of neurological disease before. I panicked. Lola is my dog and we are so closely intertwined. We read each others minds and we are together 24/7. We are best friends. When she gets sick ( especially when she had kidney cancer last year), Steve takes over as her vet, I’m just her mum. I feel useless making veterinary decisions for her but with Steve away, I had to step up, for her sake. I’m very fortunate with the incredible nurses and vets we have working with us. Lola is very loved and the team swung into action. As soon as I entered the practice, everyone could see the predicament Lola was in. She was placed on a fentanyl CRI for pain, her entire spine was radiographed and she had many tubes of blood taken to test for toxoplasmosis, infectious disease and check her organ function. A special bed was organized for her in the treatment area as strict rest was crucial. Catherine made a special trip in on her day off to assess Lola neurologically. Suzanne performed acupuncture and laser treatment. She accepts everything we do to her. She fully understands our job and that we are only trying to help. She is the perfect patient. Once all the test results were in, taking into account the neurological exam and radiographs taken, we came to the conclusion that she had either prolapsed a disc between T3-L3 or had a FCE ( fibrocartilaginous embolism). FCE causes ischaemic myelopathy which is poor blood supply to the spinal cord. Like any part of the body, the spinal cord relies on a permanent supply of blood to bring nutrients and remove waste products. Arteries supply segments of the cord on each side. FCE occurs acutely, often with no pain. Often one limb is more affected. Usually these patients make a full recovery with the help of strict rest and anti-inflammatory medication. Other possible causes included a fracture or dislocation of

the spinal vertebrae, discospondylitis or inflammatory diseases like toxoplasmosis.

human radiologists.

Due to her recent bout of cancer, resulting in the loss of a kidney, I was a little worried the cancer may have spread to her spinal cord. I have organized an MRI at St George’s hospital, so we know what we are dealing with. I go with her to sedate her and monitor her. The MRI takes about 30 minutes and is interpreted by

I also have friends in “high places”, and I consulted with a specialist surgeon in Auckland who I’ve trusted with all my pets in the past. Depending on the results from her MRI she may need spinal surgery if she doesn’t make a full recovery. Im really hoping this isn’t the case but if so then she will fly to Auckland ands be surgically assessed. The biggest problem I have has been trying to confine her and stop her tail continually wagging and her whole back end wiggling. She’s on a concoction of medications I give her 3 times daily covering all my bases and then she’s assisted when going to the toilet. Bed rest is the number 1 priority. She is sleeping with me, coming to work to rest and I am slowly walking her on a lead to toilet. She can’t understand why I am being so clingy and why I’m popping so many pills into her. She is on double antibiotic therapy, tramadol for pain and two different antiinflammatories. I’m praying this sorts itself out with time, patience, rest and love!! She certainly got it right choosing a vet as her mum……she’s slightly high maintenance medically!! But I wouldn’t have her any other way. As of writing this she is definitely on the improve trying to leap into my car. She is walking way better, but still a little ataxic and weak in her hindlegs. She has no pain and seems happy. Thanks to everyone on Facebook who has sent special wishes Lola’s way. We so appreciate this and they have helped! She is such a special, loved team member of McMaster & Heap Vets. CHRISTCHURCH GIRLS High School students, Emily Perkins and Bridget James, are sharpening their knives to cut through the competition in the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge. As winners of the Christchurch regional title, the girls are in Auckland to compete in the grand final held today. The pair underwent a live kitchen cook-off to produce four portions of entrée and main meals in just 90min to gain their place at the final. The dishes had to include New Zealand produced vegetables and chicken, with silverbeet being the hero vegetable for the entree. If they can impress the judges and secure the top place the girls will be heading to Sydney for an incredible culinary experience. All Blacks new No 12 Ten things you need to know about new All Black Anton Lienert-Brown who started in the number 12 jersey on Saturday. 1) Lienert-Brown nominates the man he has replaced, Sonny Bill Williams, as his favourite player – “great athlete and person”. His favourite sports person is basketball legend Michael Jordan. 2) He was only added to the squad early this month because SBW suffered a season-ending injury playing for the sevens in Rio. 3) Versatility has helped his rise – he made his Chiefs debut in 2014 on the wing, aged 18, against the Bulls in Pretoria. All Black coach Steve Hansen said: “The reason why we have gone for Anton is that he can cover inside and outside centre. He gives us better options than anyone else.” 4) Lienert-Brown’s midfield preferences have changed. “At the start of the year it would have been 12 but . . . I think with the skill set I have, I probably prefer it more at 13,” he said after the Super Rugby season. 5) His older brother, Daniel, is a skilful prop with the High-

landers, and is seen by some as a potential All Black. 6) Lienert-Brown is Christchurch Boys’ High’s 46th All Black – old boys include his current team mates Owen Franks and Brodie Retallick. The most recent All Black coaches – Graham Henry and Steve Hansen – also attended the school. 7) Lienert-Brown said he played Super Rugby before he played senior club rugby. His speedy rise to the test team is even more remarkable when you consider he missed the 2013 season after dislocating his shoulder in a schools match the previous year.

8) He is the first player from last year’s world title winning under-20 team to make the step up to the All Blacks. Akira Ioane may well be the next. Lienert-Brown captained the under-20s in a 2014 World Cup match against Samoa at North Harbour. 9) He’s old school when it comes to music, listing UB40 as his favourite band. 10) Lienert-Brown has already worn an All Black jersey in a practice match against Counties-Manukau at Pukekohe two weeks ago. He said it was a “dream come true”.

Historic find stops work in cul-de-sac QUALITY 19TH century ceramics and glassware have been discovered more than 1.5m underground in Richmond. The discovery was made while trenching took place this month in Sorensens Pl to build a manhole. Deep inside a circular 19th century brick-lined well, the crew found ceramics and glass bottles, ash, charcoal and the bones of animals. One of the clay smoking pipes found has “T Milo” stamped on the stem, which refers to Theophilus Milo, a tobacconist and pipe-maker in London

around the 1860s and 1870s. Since then, two other rubbish pits have been discovered in the cul-de-sac, with similar material to the first find in the well. SCIRT work stopped immediately to notify archaeological specialists about the discovery of the brick well and its contents. Underground Overground archaeologist Jessie Garland said, as well as a selection of alcohol; food; and pharmaceutical bottles, there were stemmed drinking glasses, which have not often been found in 19th century Christchurch.

Homes in Merivale, Redwood, Fendalton, Clearwater and St Albans have made the final cut due to their unique features and innovative designs. Association chief executive David Kelly said the homes are well-deserving finalists. “House of the year recognises quality craftsmanship from all over New Zealand and from across the sector, from cost effective builds through to luxury homes. Your Local Views and dangerous.

Readers respond to an opinion piece by John Verd about fluoridated water Bruce Tulloch, of Harewood – As with climate change, we have had a plethora of attacks on the scientific consensus from people without personal expertise regurgitating second-hand assertions and unverified theories. In such cases it is essential to consider that when peerreviewed scientific information is accepted by the vast majority of those qualified to judge it, it is exceedingly likely that this will be correct. Sensible decisions on health, political or other issues require informed debate. Emotive arguments and misinformation, from whatever motivation, make it much harder to reach sensible agreement and effective action in the common good. The news media have a great responsibility in their presentation of information. It is probably impractical to print a suitable response from the relevant authorities each time the papers publish an opinion against fluoridation but if you want to promote real public understanding rather than just stir controversy I would suggest adding a clear note after such items pointing out that information is available on the website www.fluoridefacts.govt.

Gavin Stuart, of Hoon Hay – Sodium Fluoride has H4 poison in red letter on the bags. I do not know what the cost is for this waste product, but it would be cheaper, safer and more effective to supply calcium fluoride tablets to all families with young children to help with the problem of tooth decay. If they are concerned, calcium fluoride can be found in most aquifers in New Zealand. With good oral hygiene and a good balanced diet, healthy teeth should be the norm for most children.

nz/ and that this is supported by the Ministry of Health, NZ Dental Association, NZ Medical Association, the Public Health Association and New Zealand nurses among others. This would enable readers to check detailed information and then judge the credibility of those involved. I am sorry your correspondent, having come to New Zealand, is kept up at night worrying about being fluoridated, but I would suggest to him that in this country our medical authorities

are not only highly responsible but also highly competent. They are unlikely to be colluding to poison him or reduce his IQ. I hope he may now be able to relax. Richard Lowen, of St Albans – With the present development in alternative motive power there seems little point in the extension of BP Edgeware service station. Look up noble gas engines. I do not agree with the fluoridation of our water supply. It is unnecessary

nina COOk Nina Cook was born in Whakatane in 1967. She was educated in Wanganui and then at Christchurch Polytechnic School of Art and Design where she received a Bachelor of Design. In 2007 Nina established the studio from which she currently works. Nina’s work is held in private collections in New Zealand and overseas. Frame OF mind For this exhibition, I am exploring issues of societal bias through a personal lens. The effect of proselytized overly fixed viewpoints on political, religious, racial, gender and environmental issues is alarming. When this alarm is combined with the information bias that occurs in this curated information age, our dual desires to belong and control are kicked into overdrive. I am not immune to this, but am also shocked at the lack of empathy or comprehension of ‘other’ that some people exhibit. This body of work is my way of trying to understand. Though many (including myself) try to be independent, compassionate, open-minded and critical in our thinking, we

cannot avoid being influenced. Not only by our own experience and state of mind, but also by broader cultural, societal, and scientific relevancies. And this is always changing. Art a fantastic way of exploring issues because it combines both intellectual and intuitive practices. The frame is overt, pedantic. As in a museum display, it provides a curated context, which is only ever part of the story. The content captures personal situations and impressions – things I have felt, seen and imagined. Whilst painting, I have been deliberately mindful of my thought process. I asked myself; What is the true impetus for this work? What narrative is cycling/growing in my mind? How is this effecting my choices? At what point/s does my ‘frame of mind’ become ‘confirmation bias’? To what degree is bias necessary? When does it become a liability? I didn’t discover any big answers, just personal ones – but every bit helps. Some clues are reflected in the work titles, much more in the works themselves as physical

Alan Upritchard – A Google search for “cities with naturally fluoridated water”, which I have just done, came up with 1.92 million results. I’m sure very few of the references deal with the question as asked, but after a few minutes reading, the good old standard Wikipedia quickly tells us that the UK and 28 other countries have areas of naturally fluoridated water. Some, like New Zealand, have negligible levels, others have well in excess of the World Health Organisation recommended dose. The rest of the paper deals with supply of artificially fluoridated water in various counties, mostly introduced in the 1960s-80s era.

While I’m happy to welcome John Verd to Christchurch, and am equally happy to read his opinions, as a retired scientist I would like to see the Nor’West News take a balanced rather than a biased position. Both you and John can easily travel to the areas highlighted in the above table and check if medical or morbidity statistics reflect, in real life, the effects predicted by the anti-fluoride lobby. As an aside, you could also check their youth dental decay statistics. There are 27 other countries in these statistics which can also potentially be accessed. With regard to hydroflourocylicic acid, it’s the dose that makes the poison. Arsenic and water are both essential to human life. It is only when ingested in excess that they become toxic. Chlorine is also extremely toxic at high rates, but as the recent events in the Hastings area have shown, is fundamental to delivering potable water. You owe it to yourself, as well as your readers, to give the widest possible range of information from which opinions can be formed. And no, I don’t wake up at night worrying about fluoride in the water. It pales into absolute insignificance compared to the human tragedy of Middle East today.

SCHOOL WINNERS: Selwyn House School pupils won the Supreme Class Award for the book boxes they made for their school library.

Top maths award for Selwyn House SELWYN HOUSE School pupils took home top honours at the Cantamaths competition at Horncastle Arena, winning the supreme class award for the book boxes they made for their school library. The year 7 pupils designed and made seven timber book boxes, based on a tangram, that could be moved around the floor to create geometric shapes and pictures. The project was the result of an identified need to make their library more interactive and dynamic. Pupils have focussed on authentic learning tasks this year; tasks that are based on real-world problems and designed to provide rich learning experiences. The theme of Cantamaths was Why Maths?, which was relevant to the

authentic learning goal, so the pupils used this opportunity to showcase how prevalent maths is in their lives. The dynamic and original nature of the entry impressed the judges, who told the girls that they also liked the story behind their project. Tangram-shaped biscuits were baked, using a biscuit cutter made from the school’s 3D printer, and sold at lunchtime to raise money for the project. The class teachers said they have noted a marked increase in pupil engagement and a more positive attitude towards maths as a result of this project. The book boxes can be viewed in the Selwyn House School office, where they are currently on display.

Rangi Ruru; Boys’ High Award recognises professionalism win basketball champs By Gordon Findlater RANGI RURU Girls’ School won the Whelan Trophy after defeating Christchurch Girls’ High School in the secondary schools’ basketball final. Christchurch GHS did well to fight back in the final stages of the game. However, it was a case of too little, too late. Rangi hung on to win 74-62. They met at Cowles Stadium, last week, with Rangi dominating play in the first quarter, jumping out to a lead of more than 20 points. Junior Tall Fern and Rangi player Esra McGoldrick starred with 43 points in the win, helping her team advance to the final in dominant fashion. In the Thompson Trophy final, Christchurch Boys’ High School took on Burnside High School. Burnside had defeated Christchurch BHS in their past two meetings. However, the loss of stars Toby Gillooly and Isaiah Morris was too much for them to overcome. Christchurch BHS took an early commanding lead and never looked back. They eventually won the game in a blow-out 95-62. Quinn Clinton from Christch-

BISHOPDALE

Your local shopping centre

51 years on - still going strong! Bishopdale Shopping Centre, which officially opened in 1966, has recently celebrated its 51st birthday. The shopping precinct was originally developed by what was then the Ministry of Works, and it is based on a similar concept that had been developed slightly earlier in Porirua. The “pioneers” of the Bishopdale shopping community included the Bishopdale Pharmacy (originally the Chemist) and the shops on side, Bishopdale Butchery and a Books and Toy shop. Woolworths opened shortly after on the site where the New World Supermarket stands today. This was followed by the Post Office, which to this day has an official opening date plaque displayed. As geographical area became populated and the paddocks surrounding the initial ‘street of shops’ were developed over the years, other businesses joined, including Millers, Canterbury Savings Bank, Russell’s Footwear, Mrs Popes, Hobby’s Menswear, Minsons, Para Rubber, New World, Self Help Grocers, Regent Furnishers, Naismith’s TV and Electrical, Eric Wilson Jeweller, Westpac, McGregor’s Paint Shop, Bishopdale Sports, Bishopdale Law,

Foate Optometrist, a wine shop, Ladies Lingerie, Dentist, Doctors, TAB, Fish Shop, Dairy, to name but a few. In the 1960s, a Farmers Department Store established itself at the shopping mall, but when it was closed, Dress for Less started to occupy the site, until Mitre 10 moved into the building. The Original Bishopdale Tavern occupied the site where the YMCA is today, and there were many community meetings held there. The area where the tavern is now was developed privately and expanded the establishment of Parkside Plaza. Early attractions that featured at the shopping centre include bonfire and fireworks displays for Guy Fawkes, Father Christmas Parades, Mannequin Parades and cooking displays to name a few. Locals today are greeted with a variety of retail businesses from owner operator through to ‘big players’. There is a real emphasis on community interaction, as reflected in the unique feature of businesses and community services alongside one another.

Owning a husky requires dedication Scott Bamford is the host of CTV’s Rural New Zealand. Watch Rural New Zealand, brought to you by Carrfields, Wednesdays at 7.30pm on CTV Freeview channel 40, live and on demand at ctv.co.nz By Scott Bamford THIS WINTER, at least one husky a week is arriving at the West Melton branch of Husky Rescue NZ, the company re-homing abandoned or unwanted huskies. This season is shaping up to be the worst in the company’s seven-year history. Although many of the unwanted dogs come from Auckland, Husky Rescue NZ has experienced an influx of huskies from Christchurch. “We do always have dogs from Christchurch … it’s pretty much one dog a week from Canterbury,” Husky Rescue NZ founder Michelle Attwood said. “It’s the worst winter we’ve ever had.” The siberian husky is known to be a hands-on breed. Ms Attwood said a minimum exercise routine of 5km a day is needed to keep them healthy. “In summer, that means [running or walking] very late at night, or early in the morning, to avoid those 20 deg C temperatures.” Huskies also require seasonally intense fur maintenance, a lot of entertainment and a firm

understanding of who sets the rules, she said. “If the owner fails to establish their position as leader, the husky, with its strong pack mentality, will become the pack leader instead and be almost impossible to control,” Ms Attwood said. Many people will purchase a husky before understanding the dog’s needs and then give up

when the job becomes too hard, she said. “[Owners] say: ‘Oh well, it jumped a six-foot fence, it ate the neighbour’s cat and it won’t come back when it’s called’ … those are all just standard husky traits.” Ms Attwood reported reoccurring problems from irresponsible breeders. “We’ve had over 12 dogs from

just one backyard breeder … time and time again we are seeing the same problem dogs from the same problem breeders,” she said. The rescue centre caters to huskies through a combination of pack-like living arrangements and dry-land scootering and sledding. “They do really well at the sport and they love it, getting them to stop running is the hardest part,” Ms Attwood said. Husky owner Christos Merentitis adopted his pet Max about

three years ago. Strict training and constant exercise is what helped Max become a beloved member of the family. “I got Max when he was 10-months-old. A lot of trainers said that was too late to correct bad habits, but you’ve just got to keep on top of it and actually want to see a change in your dog . . . take them for a huge run, and then do 10 minutes of training – when they are too tired to be cheeky or disagree with you,” he said.

SATURDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER

where adult learners are welcome At Ara Institute of Canterbury’s six community hubs, people can learn at their own pace in a friendly, welcoming environment that supports people who are returning to study after a long break or those who are undertaking study for the first time. At hubs in New Brighton, Bishopdale, Hornby, Rangiora, Christchurch’s Madras Street and now also in Timaru, Ara staff support community learning needs through a range of programmes. Computing for Free is a popular choice for adult learners looking for accessible training for basic computer skills or to upskill to improve their career opportunities.

Computing for Free offers a range of self-paced, short courses of between 20 to 40 hours to introduce people to a wide range of specific programmes as Web Design and Powerpoint. The facilitators who are on-hand to provide support are passionate about the courses they teach and the communities they teach in, providing an excellent experience for students. Timetables

are flexible to fit around family and professional commitments. Having completed Computing for Free herself, tutor Jo Harkerss understands the challenges of returning to study. “For many people it is a huge stepping stone. They may have been made redundant or been out of the workforce after having children and here they can connect with other people and learn new skills that will make them more employable and give them confidence to try other things too. “They might have used computers in the past, but programmes change and skills need to be updated,” Jo says. “The hardest thing is for people to walk in the door. Then they realise that we are really nice! And that they can do it. You see people come in who feel afraid of computers, but we are here to help them to achieve. Study is not easy for everyone, but our programmes have a good balance of theory and practice, plus the programmes are self-paced to fit around other life commitments such as work and family.” Computing for Free also caters for adult learners who want to upskill for career progression, with programmes such as the National Certificate in Computing, which is a formal qualification that employers recognise and value. For students who find a passion for computing there are further programmes on offer at Ara from certificates to degrees. Enrolling is easy – just pop into your local branch to discuss your needs with one of our friendly facilitators or visit http://www.ara. ac.nz/study-options/programmes-by-location/ community-study.

lifelong learning is vital for a rich, rewarding life and worthy of a conversation. Adult Learners’ Week/He Tangata Mātauranga, celebrates all adult learning whether it’s upskilling for a better job, preparing for further study, improving life skills or having fun. Every year thousands of ACE providers, educators, learners and supporters organise a huge range of events to highlight the value of adult learning. The Government priorities for Adult and Community Education (ACE) include literacy, numeracy, English language (ESOL), te Reo Māori and sign language. Providers all over New Zealand offer learning in these core areas and many others. Courses not eligible for funding are often run by volunteers. In Christchurch many of the organisations providing ACE opportunities will be celebrating with their learners

Celebrating 54 years on the local music scene NEVILLE Wilkins & the Viscounts celebrate 54 years on the music scene this weekend making them one of New Zealand’s longest established dance bands.

Pitney, Eddie Calvert, Neil Diamond, Dire Straits, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, Englebert Humperdink, and Elvis Presley,” said Neville. “So we play a good mixture of 50's, 60's, 70's ballads, rock and roll, country and even Irish.” Today the Viscounts still perform at private functions and the occasional public show, however in the past they have shared the stage with some wonderful performers including Eddie Low, Yolande Gibson, Maria Dallas, Frank Rowles, Bunny Walters, Toni Williams, Tommy Adderley, Dean Waretini, and Jonanthan J, to name a few.

Christchurch trumpeter, Neville Wilkins formed the band in 1962 and during its career The Viscounts has had around 60 members, with some staying as long as 20 years. Their first residencies included Christchurch’s 500 Club in Chancery Lane and The Town & About in Peterborough St, followed later by the Bush Inn Courts and Twiggers. With a career spanning well over five decades, the group has adapted its repertoire with time and today play a wide selection of material. “I always aimed for the band to play the most popular artists, such as Ricky Nelson, Billy Vaughan, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Gene
